A total of 10 unselected out-patients with moderate (n = 3) to severe (n = 7) cases of scalp psoriasis as diagnosed by an  experienced Ayurveda practitioner and characterized by the 2009 European consensus statement on scalp psoriasis management  has defined scalp psoriasis were treated with GouriKalyani Herbal Oil topical application twice daily before bath. Patients had to had a disease endurance of >3 months and at least one conventional previous treatment approach. Patients were informed about the available treatment with the GouriKalyani Herbal Oil topical application. Treatment duration was scheduled for 8 weeks and bottles of 200 ml were handed out as anticipated for proper use during the planned 8-week treatment period. Patients were asked to apply the oil twice daily and hereby to cover all skin lesions on head with a thin layer of oil.

Coconut oil is found to reduce the protein loss remarkably for both undamaged and damaged hair when used as a pre-wash and post-wash grooming product in various animal models compared to mineral oil and sunflower oil. In a mass spectrometric investigation of human hair comparing mineral oil and coconut oil, it was found that Coconut oil penetrates the hair shaft while the mineral oil does not.

Aloe vera, commonly known as Barbados or Curacao Aloe, is an herbal medicine with a long tradition of use by a variety of cultures. The traditional uses of the clear mucilaginous gel are manifold, ranging from topical applications to reduce perspiration to oral dosing for diabetes and a range of gastrointestinal ailments. The active agents have shown considerable analgesic, antipruritic, wound healing and anti-inflammatory properties, thus justifying consideration of Aloe Vera as an effective remedy for the treatment of psoriasis.  In a placebo-controlled, double-blind study, with Aloe vera extract in a hydrophilic cream was found to be effective in the management of plaque psoriasis topically.


All patients were evaluated for 8 weeks and assessments of disease activity using photographs took place at baseline and 8 weeks after initialization of treatment by the treating physician.

In addition, all patients completed a patient’s questionnaire assessing satisfaction with treatment and side effects. Furthermore compliance with the recommended application was asked by interview. Written informed consent was obtained from all patients prior to treatment with Gourikalyani Herbal oil. There was no selection of patients by age, gender, localization and severity of disease, or previous treatments.

Initially, the vast majority of patients (n = 7) showed a severe affection of scalp psoriasis as defined by more than 50% scalp involvement. However, during continuous observation and under sustained topical treatment a gradual and pronounced clinical improvement became obvious in almost all cases within 8 weeks. A reduction of >90% was observed in all treated patients, at the 8-week assessment.
